Introduction

Preparing for cooler months in Owego, NY, means more than just unpacking your winter clothes. It also requires ensuring your vehicle is ready to handle the chilly weather. As the temperature drops, your car's demands change, and Kevins Royal Automotive is here to help you with that transition. From understanding winter tires to ensuring your car's fluids are ideal for colder conditions, we offer valuable insights to keep you safe and secure on the road.

Battery Health and Performance

A car battery's efficiency decreases as temperatures fall. In winter, the cold can reduce your battery's power, making it difficult for your engine to start.

  • Test Your Battery: Regular testing ensures it's operating at peak performance. If your battery is older than three years, consider having it checked by a professional.
  • Keep Connections Clean: Corrosion can impact battery connections. Clean terminals and ensure they are tightly connected.

    • Your battery's performance shouldn't be a guessing game. Get your battery checked at Kevins Royal Automotive to avoid unexpected breakdowns.

    Tires and Tread Check

When it comes to winter tires Owego residents understand the importance of proper traction.

  • Tread Depth: Ensure your tires have a minimum tread depth of 2/32 inches. Proper tread helps maintain grip and reduces hydroplaning risk.
  • Tire Pressure: Tires lose pressure in colder weather. Check your tires monthly to maintain correct inflation levels.
  • Winter Tires: If you're considering winter tires, evaluate the benefits. They provide better traction on snowy and icy roads, which is crucial for safety.

    • Visit us for tire checks or to discuss if winter tires are the right choice for you.

    Brakes, Wipers, and Lights

Safety during the fall and winter months in Owego means maintaining visibility and control.

  • Brakes: Ensure your brakes are in top condition. Listen for unusual noises or vibrations and address them immediately.
  • Wipers and Washer Fluid: Replace wipers annually and top off your washer fluid with a solution that resists freezing.
  • Lights: Shorter days demand optimal lighting. Check that all lights function correctly and replace any burnt-out bulbs.

    • Routine checks at Kevins Royal Automotive can identify and rectify potential issues before they escalate.

    Fluid Levels and Coolant System

Your vehicle's fluids are its lifeblood. As temperatures plummet, maintaining optimal fluid levels is crucial.

  • Coolant: Confirm your coolant is at the right level and mixed correctly to prevent freezing.
  • Oil and Transmission Fluids: Cold weather thickens fluids, so ensure they're at appropriate levels and viscosity.

    • We recommend regular maintenance visits to avoid unnecessary wear on your engine.

    Rust Prevention and Underbody Care

In Owego, road salt is a common measure against icy and snowy roads. However, it can lead to rust and corrosion.

  • Wash Regularly: Clean your vehicle, especially the underbody, to remove salt.
  • Rust-Proofing: Consider rust-proofing treatments to protect your vehicle's vital components.

    • Protect your investment by visiting Kevins Royal Automotive for underbody inspections and rust prevention treatments.
